"Contact lens" cornea in rheumatoid arthritis.
نویسنده
چکیده
It has been noted that patients suffering from long-standing rheumatoid arthritis often display a characteristic corneal lesion. This consists of a partial opacity of the periphery of the cornea involving part or all of its circumference. The cornea in this area is thinned, usually by about a third of its normal thickness and has a well-demarcated central edge. It is minimally vascularized by superficial vessels crossing the limbus. The appearance is quite striking even upon superficial examination and resembles that of an eye wearing a microcorneal contact lens, so much so that it could well be called "contact lens" cornea (Fig. i).

Five patients with melting of the cornea in association with rheumatoid arthritis are described. The arthritis was often inactive and without systemic manifestations, in contrast to that seen in association with scleritis. In 3 there was evidence of reduced tear formation, but in none was tear production absent. In 3 patients the lesions healed during treatment with azathioprine or penicillamine.
متن کاملA clinical decision support system for contact lens evaluation
Background: Contact lenses are transparent, thin plastic disks that cover the surface of the cornea. Appropriate lens prescription should be performed properly by an expert to provide better visual acuity and reduce side effects. The lens administration is a multi-stage, complex and time-consuming process involving many considerations. The purpose of this study was to develop a decision support...
متن کاملCorneal Findings in Rheumatologic Diseases
Cornea is a major structure of eyes affected in rheumatologic patients. It is important to know corneal findings in rheumatic diseases because it can provide early diagnosis and treatment for systemic disease and reduce the risk of complications as irreversible visual loss. In this article, we will summarize and discuss the corneal findings and the formation mechanisms in the diseases of Sjogre...

PURPOSE We evaluated the usefulness of commercially available materials for protecting the cornea from drying during vitrectomy with a wide-angle viewing system. METHODS THREE VITREORETINAL SURGEONS EVALUATED FUNDUS VISIBILITY DURING VITRECTOMY ON THE IMAGES OF FIVE STUDY MATERIALS USED ON THE CORNEA: balanced saline solution, a viscoelastic agent, a vitrectomy contact lens, a rigid gas perme...

A review of 100 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty revealed 47 who required therapeutic soft contact lenses in the early postoperative period. Twelve corneal ulcer-infiltrates, 11 of which were culture positive, occurred during soft contact lens wear (23% incidence of this complication in contact lens fitted eyes). The most common offending organism was coagulase-negative staphyloc...
